Emma Lind was selected as the 2013 recipient of the Charles E. Lind Scholarship. The scholarship was established in memory of Mr. Lind, a longtime seventh-grade teacher at Green Park Lutheran School. It is awarded each year to a seventh-grader who will return to Green Park for his or her eighth-grade year. The recipient is selected by a scholarship committee, according to a number of guidelines, including such character traits as a positive attitude, service to the school and being a Christian witness.

Pictured, from left, are: Emma’s father, Brian, Emma, Roberta Lind, and Emma’s mother, Kathy. Congratulations, Emma!

Based on the popular children’s books by Jeff Brown, The Flat Stanley Project started in 1995 by Dale Hubert. In the story, Stanley Lambchop is a little boy who is squished “flat as a pancake” when a bulletin board falls on home as he sleeps one night. Stanley soon discovers some real advantages to being flat. This allows Stanley to participate in a series of adventures as he is mailed all around the world.

Kindergarteners at Green Park Lutheran School in Miss Stephanie Torbeck’s class learn about Flat Stanley. Each year, students mail their decorated Flat Stanleys to friends and family out of town. What’s special to the class is when photos are mailed back describing his adventures.

Wed. 5/22: Miss Stephanie Torbeck, kindergarten

Thurs. 5/23: Mrs. Brenda Huster, 5th grade

Please keep in mind that due to time conflicts, last-minute schedule changes and breaking news, Salutes may not air when they are scheduled to do so. In the case that a salute does not air at all at any time during the day in it was scheduled to air, the salute would be rescheduled for a later day and we would notify the school of this change.

The perception of the traditional kindergarten as a holistic introduction to school, full of play exploration, has changed. Recently there has been a growing trend in education toward the usage of scripted curriculum and standardized testing at successively younger grade levels; and this trend has raised serious concerns among early childhood educators. Play, so often misunderstood, with its rich opportunities for creativity, decision-making, problem-solving, social interaction, learning and fun is disappearing from kindergarten classrooms. Play, as a tool of the mind, is a critical foundation for development and learning throughout life.

Candyce K. Seider, Ph.D., Professor of Education and Chair of Early Childhood Education at Concordia University in Wisconsin paid Green Park Lutheran School a visit this year. She is part of the Play Institute at Concordia and visited our campus investigating our kindergarten. She discussed the perceptions and realities of play in kindergarten and stressed the importance of child-initiated play. “Play is not a recess from learning,” Dr. Seider stresses, “it doesn’t mean learning stops.”

Dr. Seider’s work is an extension of a national group Alliance for Childhood’s “Crisis in the Kindergarten: Why Children Need to Play in School” For more information about this study click here.

Her qualitative study explored the quality of child-initiated play and hopes to determine the perceptions of kindergarten teachers and principals related to what a play-based kindergarten is. Her motivation is to raise awareness of the “crisis” in education as play disappears from classrooms, homes, backyards and parks. Dr. Seider was helpful in her visit to Green Park to articulate the definition and benefits of play to learning and health wellness. While our kindergarten curriculum is considered academic, she was pleased to see opportunities throughout the day where Green Park students engaged in child-initiated play.

When you choose a Lutheran School you can align your child’s education with a focus on Christ. Lutheran schools offer excellence in education combined with decades of experience, accreditation and depth in extra curriculars including sports, art and music.

The NAEP report, often called the “Nation’s Report Card” ranked the Lutheran School system the #1 school system in the country. When compared to public schools, charter schools, and other large school systems, the system of Lutheran schools ranked the best.

Additionally, a new report released by ACT shows that private school students are significantly better prepared for college than students who attend public schools.
