The GROW Program at Green Park Lutheran School is an after-school enrichment program which focuses on additional skills and opportunities not allotted during the school day. GROW will allow students to explore a variety of topics that will enhance learning, broaden thinking and encourage self-expression and problem solving. Green Park will offer a variety of GROW sessions this fall for all ages of students.

Goals of GROW
By participating in the GROW program, Green Park students will:
1. Engage in creative and high quality programs that challenge student thinking, enhance creativity and improve problem solving.
2. Interact with students at multiple grade levels, GROW mentors and their school community
3. Build upon concepts learned in the traditional educational environment and gain alternative strategies to acquire knowledge
4. Support the overall mission and vision of GPLS as a high caliber institution of Christian education
SPRING 2012 SESSIONS
Theater Art: Intro and BeyondMentor: Mrs. Dianne Mueller Day/Length: Mondays 4 sessions (3:30-4:30) Session Dates: April 2, 16, 23, 30 (no school April 9) Age Range: Grades 4-6 Location: Room 100 Session Fee: $40.00 This GROW session continues our fabulous theater arts and drama experience. Students will engage in a variety of theater games, theatrical improvisation and learn to use their bodies and voices to create dramatic and comic characters. Acting terms and beginning professional theater guidelines will be taught as well. Parents are invited to a short performance at the end of the last session. NEW AND CONTINUING STUDENTS WELCOME!!!! Intro to FUNgineeringMentor: Mrs. Dawn Partington Day/Length: Tuesdays 8 sessions (3:30-4:30) Session Dates: March 27, April 3, 10, 17, 24, May 1, 8, 15 Age Range: Grades K-2 Location: Room 100 Session Fee: $95.00 Students will be introduced to simple machines, begin exploration of physical science concepts, manipulate basic working models of levers, wheels and axles, pulleys and gears using LEGO® Duplo educational kits (Why Duplos? They are the best age appropriate tool for this version of introduction to engineering), builds include: catapult, wind maker, paper crimper, and many more. Student activities are designed around creativity, exploring, investigating and problem solving in a fun group environment. Clay CreationsMentor: Mrs. Becky Biber Day/Length: Fridays 4 sessions (3:30-4:30) Session Dates: March 30, April 20, 27, May 4 (no school April 6, early release April 13) Age Range: Grades 1-8 Location: Art Room Session Fee: $40.00 Get messy for the sake of ART!!!! Mrs. Biber’s next art session focuses on pottery and clay creation. Students will investigate various clay techniques, including slab and coil as well as explore how clay responds to texturing and glazing. Several projects will be brought home at the end of this session. |
3D Video Game ProgrammingMentor: Computer Explorers Staff Day/Length: Wednesdays 8 sessions (3:30-4:30) Session Dates: March 28, April 4, 11, 18, 25, May 2, 9, 16 Age Range: Grades 6-8 Location: Computer Lab Upper Level Wing Session Fee: $95.00 Design, Discover, Dream-Up! – Using Alice, an innovative 3D software, you’ll design animation for an interactive game, movie or story. This object-oriented program is fun and challenging, as you discover the worlds of computer science and programming using 3D graphics in a virtual world. Let your imagination soar…if you can dream-up a concept, you can design it! FUNgineering 1 Part AMentor: Computer Explorers Staff Day/Length: Thursdays 8 sessions (3:30-4:30) Session Dates: March 29, April 12, 18, 19, 26, May 3, 10, 17 Age Range: Grades 3-5 Location: Room 100 Session Fee: $95.00 Using LEGO® Technic pieces students will work with motorized machines, catapults, wheels and axles, working with structures, Pythagoras’ Theorem, forces, levers and much more. Session includes many STEM concepts. Students work individually and in teams to solve challenges and competitions.
