GET READY TO GROW!
The GROW Program at Green Park Lutheran School is an after-school enrichment program which focuses on additional skills and opportunities not allotted during the school day. GROW will allow students to explore a variety of topics that will enhance learning, broaden thinking and encourage self-expression and problem solving. Green Park will offer a variety of GROW sessions this fall for all ages of students.
Goals of GROW
By participating in the GROW program, Green Park students will:
1. Engage in creative and high quality programs that challenge student thinking, enhance creativity and improve problem solving.
2. Interact with students at multiple grade levels, GROW mentors and their school community
3. Build upon concepts learned in the traditional educational environment and gain alternative strategies to acquire knowledge
4. Support the overall mission and vision of GPLS as a high caliber institution of Christian education
WINTER 2012 SESSIONS
Theater ArtsMentor: Mrs. Dianne Mueller Day/Length: Mondays 4 sessions (3:30-4:30) Session Dates: January 23, 30 and February 6, 13 Age Range: Grades 4-6 Location: Room 100 Session Fee: $40.00 This GROW session explores the world of theater arts. Students will engage in a variety of theater games, theatrical improvisation and learn to use their bodies and voices to create dramatic and comic characters. Acting terms and beginning professional theater guidelines will be taught as well. FUNgineering 2 Part AMentor: Computer Explorers Staff Day/Length: Tuesdays 8 sessions (3:30-4:30) Session Dates: January 24, 31, February 7, 14, 21, 28 and March 6, 13 Age Range: Grades 6-8 Location: Room 100 Session Fee: $95.00 This hands-on exciting engineering classes combining LEGO® Education and LEGO® Technic materials to explore motorized simple and complex machines by building realistic models. Students work in teams to solve more complex challenges utilizing their new found engineering knowledge of applying factors to force & distance, vertical cross beams, motors and cross beams, single, double, triple and quadruple pulley systems, tower crane, pulley lift and more! Hands On RoboticsMentor: Computer Explorers Staff Day/Length: Wednesdays 8 sessions (3:30-4:30) Session Dates: January 25, February 1, 8, 15, 22, 29 and March 7, 14 Age Range: Grades K-2 Location: Room 100 Session Fee: $95.00 Come program our robot Roamer to bowl, sing, dance, turn, draw, measure, and travel across the globe and play some Olympic games. COMPUTER EXPLORERS will help you explore how robotics and programming go hand-in-hand as they write programs and give commands for Roamer to follow. Video Game AnimationMentor: Computer Explorers Staff Day/Length: Thursdays 8 sessions (3:30-4:30) Session Dates: January 26, February 2, 9, 16, 23 and March 1, 8, 15 Age Range: Grades 3-5 Location: Computer Lab Upper Level Wing Session Fee: $95.00 Dive into the world of video game animation by creating characters that dance, sing and interact with one another. Add sound effects and music clips to create a dynamic video animation game using Scratch, the innovative programming language created just for kids by the MIT Media Lab. You can post your games online so that your friends, your parents, even your grandmother can play your video game! Creativity rules in this fun version of video game design. Wonders of WatercolorMentor: Mrs. Becky Biber Day/Length: Fridays 4 sessions (3:30-4:30) Session Dates: January 20, 27 and February 3, 10 Age Range: Grades 1-8 Location: Art Room Session Fee: $40.00 Connect with your creativity as you explore the artistic medium of watercolor painting. Students will investigate various watercolor painting techniques as well as explore how watercolors react on different types of paper and surfaces. Each student will receive their own watercolor paint set which they will take home once the session ends.
